Large Woodpeckers at Martinwoods Cabins in Hocking Hills

Today was beautiful, very spring/summer like. Not sure what the weekend will bring but today was perfect. Had the windows open to allow all the fresh spring air to enter the cabin, after being closed up all winter it was great to be able to smell the fresh air and listen to all the sounds of nature that abound here in Hocking Hills. We have the largest woodpeckers, I would swear these things are on Miracle-Gro. They are huge, at least 12" long, I think the woodpeckers get bigger each year. I was able to sit and enjoy all the sounds of the birds, wind through the trees and all the noises on the ground like the chipmunks and squirrels as they ran through the woods. weather update again for hocking hills

Weather was 53 and pouring rain yesterday, rain and 40's today. No snow which is good but when we get rain and it freezes that is worse than snow.

Just wanted to update on weather since I am trying to keep a record for guests so they will know how it changes from day to day and year to year

People always ask what the weather is going to be like, though there is no way to determine that from year to year, (we are lucky if we know from day to day) we have decided to try and put the temp on here each day as a way of keeping track of what the weather is so people can see for themselves how it changes from day to day here at Martinwoods Cabins in Hocking Hills

Today is was very foggy, we were supposed to have a high of 40 something but as of 5pm it never made it over 34* and of course we still had plenty of ice here at the cabin.

Hope this will be of some use to everyone that reads our blog.

Another rainy cold day in Ohio BUT the good news is we are one day closer to spring and with spring we get the beautiful flowers, trees budding and all the animals coming out from hibernating through the winter. I love spring and summer and cannot wait for the warmer temps but there is still a lot to do during the colder months. There is the winter hike this month at Old Mans Cave and just sitting around a fire in the great room is a great way to spend quality time with friends and family, free from stress and work.

Hocking Hills winter storm

Winter is not over yet, just had a winter storm here in the Hocking Hills, good thing the guests parked at the bottom of the hill as I suggested, the electric went out for a few hours. You never can tell about the weather in Ohio.

When coming to the Hocking Hills in the winter be prepared, bring food that you can eat if the electric goes out, have wood to keep warm.

It is not good to be stuck anywhere but at our cabins in the Hocking Hills at least you have the beauty of nature to look at and walk around in :)

hocking Hills Cabins

It is still snowing tonight here in Hocking Hills. We had quite a bit of snow at the cabins today and of course the first snow my jeep decided to let me down for the first time in 8 years. My guests had to park at the bottom of the hill since they did not bring 4 wheel drive as mentioned, we will have to try and get all of their stuff carried down since I do not have my jeep to go up the fill

When coming to the Hocking Hills in the winter it is always a good idea to bring 4 wheel drive. We do let everyone know that if you come to our cabins in the Hocking Hills during the winter and we get snow we cannot be responsible for getting you up and down the hills, they are very steep but we do plow but there are those unusual occasions like today when the jeep was not able to do what it needed because the frame cracked and needs to be repaired. I have never had this happen in the 9 years we have been open but there is always a first like today. The Hocking Hills is not a place to be without 4 wheel drive in the winter, if you have ever been to the Hocking Hills you know what I am talking about, if you have never been to the Hocking Hills just ask anyone, there are many hills and curves and 4 wheel drive is a must when there is snow.
